Ways to Celebrate Easter at Home
The reflective season of Lent is drawing to a close, and soon, Easter will be here. Christians will celebrate a joyous occasion: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. One of the challenges they will face this year is doing so safely. Attending Mass in person could put your family at risk, so you may decide to celebrate at home. Here are our recommendations for honoring this holy day while safely at home:
Dress Up and Set the Table
If you’ve been working from home, your daily wardrobe is probably not your Sunday best. This may also be the second year in a row you have celebrated Easter at home. To get in the spirit, dress up like you would for an Easter service or party. Get your child in on it, too. Set the table for Easter dinner. Even if it’s a little different with just your family, Easter is still an occasion to celebrate. Take a moment to remember what you’re celebrating and why. Make it memorable for yourself and the rest of your family.
Watch an Easter Service Online
Many churches are livestreaming Easter services and posting the videos online after the fact. Some are even sharing their services in podcast form. Whether you want to watch a livestream at sunrise or sleep in to watch or listen later, set time aside to “attend” a service with your family. If you anticipate your child getting antsy during the service, use this time to paint or dye some Easter eggs.
Schedule a Virtual Hangout
Even if you can’t physically be with your extended family and friends, you can still spend time together. Figure out your preferred video chat service and a time that works best for everyone, and schedule a virtual hangout. Make it an egg decorating party, or have everyone try a new recipe for an Easter brunch. Keep in mind that everyone has a different schedule, so if you’re the host, make it clear that people can come and go as they please, and give them enough time to do so.
Easter Egg Balloons
While your child can participate in all of these activities, what makes their holidays special is having the opportunity to play. Decorating Easter eggs is great fun, but it doesn’t take very long. Other egg-related games can get messy fast. Use balloons instead of breaking out (or breaking) a carton of eggs! Consider decorating balloons like Easter eggs to keep them occupied. Use the balloons for games like “don’t drop the egg,” where you keep the “egg” in the air as long as possible, and chicken run, where you put the “egg” between your knees and try to get it across the living room, driveway or backyard without dropping it.
Send Easter Cards
This year has been hard for many families, and Easter is the perfect opportunity to reach out to loved ones near and far to remind them how much they’re loved. Write cards to those you haven’t seen in a while. Aside from people you know, consider making cards for hospital workers, nursing home residents, and others who have been impacted by the pandemic. An Easter card can be a special unexpected treat, and everyone can use a reminder that someone out there cares. At our Titusville Catholic school, we believe it’s important to share love whenever possible.
