Faith-Based Goals for the New Year

Every year brings its own set of challenges and changes. As the year progresses, many New Year’s resolutions get lost in the shuffle. Consider setting goals that help you grow closer to God and your family this time around. Talk to each other about changes you can make together, and see what you can do on your own to strengthen your faith. Here are some resolutions we recommend:

Acknowledge God’s Presence More

When you’re going through the motions of day-to-day life, it may feel like the world around you is all that exists. Your child may have an easier time being attentive to the fact that God is there, but it doesn’t hurt to remind them. More importantly, you need to remind yourself that God is always with you, especially in moments where you feel abandoned or alone.

Pray Together

Family bonding is important for children. One great way to bond as a family is by praying together. It doesn’t have to be a rigidly planned activity. You can choose a time that works for everyone, like before school or at bedtime. Everyone in the family will have an opportunity to grow closer to each other and to God.

Make Time for God

Between work, school, soccer practice and piano lessons, you and your child may struggle to find time for faith. Sometimes it’s not about finding time but making time for what’s most important in life. Take a look at your family’s schedules to find the best time to focus on your relationships with God through devotionals or quiet time reading scripture. Talk to your child about what they’re reading to help them stay on track.

Memorize Scripture

Scripture memorization is more than a cool Bible school party trick. When you’re stressed, scripture that you’ve memorized can help you remember what the Lord says about a particular situation or anxiety you feel. See if you can find especially relatable passages to memorize throughout the year. Consider finding one piece of scripture a week that gives you peace. Encourage your child to memorize one piece every month. By doing this, you will both have intentions to reference during difficult times.

New Year’s resolutions can be difficult to keep, but it’s much easier when they’re meaningful to you and your family.
