Giving Back During the Holidays as a Family

During the holiday season, the spirit of giving is stronger than ever. Use this time to show your child about the joys of volunteering and supporting the community. There’s always someone around who can use time more than anything else. You just need to know where to look. Here are some of the places where you and your family can give back to the Brevard County community during this holiday season:

Participating in Turkey Trots

Events like the Space Coast Turkey Trot give locals a way to support community causes while getting some serious steps in. You and your family can get up bright and early to walk or run at one of these 5K events. If you’re not an athletic family, there’s also the option of volunteering at a turkey trot. However you participate, turkey trots give you a chance to get out in the community and support local charities.

Helping Out at Horse Farms

Organizations like Hart for Horses look out after retired horses that might otherwise experience neglect or be euthanized when they are no longer “useful.” Volunteers can help with anything from filling water troughs to grooming horses and assisting instructors. If you’re not looking for physically demanding work, you can also help out farms like this through fundraising events and other activities. There’s plenty for the whole family to do at one of these farms.

Giving Time to Food Pantries

Pantries like Second Harvest Food Bank are always on the lookout for volunteers to help with various programs. Most food pantries require the help of volunteers to sort through nonperishable products before they’re sent off to homes for the holidays. Some also provide opportunities to prepare food, though tasks like that are typically left to adults. By helping out at a food pantry, your family directly helps families who can’t afford to buy their own holiday dinners.

Assisting Animals at Pet Shelters

The Brevard Humane Society and other pet shelters always need volunteers. Volunteers help with administrative tasks, animal handling and more to take the burden off of hardworking shelter employees. Children often need to be accompanied by adults to work at pet shelters, making this the perfect family opportunity. By helping at animal shelters, you make a difference in the lives of the animals that live there.

We encourage students to seek ways to give back to their community at all times of the year, but especially during the holiday season.
