Practice Outdoor Summer Safety as a Family

From swimming pools to camping trips, there are an endless number of ways to enjoy summer break with the family. But with spending time outdoors comes taking an extra level of precaution to ensure that both you and your children stay safe. No matter what activities you have planned this summer, here’s how to have fun while practicing outdoor safety as a family:

Wear Sun Protection

As you and your children spend more time in the sun, you’ll want to wear adequate sun protection to stay safe from UV radiation. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher to all exposed areas of the body, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and seeking shade when possible. Hydration is also crucial in preventing sun poisoning and heatstroke, so be sure to drink plenty of water, as well.

Learn About Stranger Danger

We never plan to leave our children alone in public, but sometimes, mistakes happen. If your child ever wanders out of your sight or gets separated from the rest of the family, knowing and recognizing the signs of stranger danger can help protect them, should an unsafe situation arise. Before you go anywhere you know other people will be, review the protocol for being approached by strangers with your child: scream or shout “no” when a stranger asks them to come with them, locate a trustworthy adult (such as a police officer or park ranger with a badge), and go to a safe zone where they can be reunited with family.

Practice Social Distancing from Other Groups

According to the CDC, those who are fully vaccinated from COVID-19 are able to gather in small groups outdoors without wearing masks. However, it’s important to remain mindful of your surroundings and stay at least 6 feet apart from other families and gatherings. Continue to use hand sanitizer, wash your hands, and cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough to minimize your risk of receiving and transferring harmful viruses.
