Summer Service Projects

Are you and your family looking to help your community this summer, get involved in international missions, or just show your neighbors that you care? Summertime is a perfect opportunity to dedicate some extra time to serving the world around you. Take a look at these easy and inspiring ideas for summer service projects:

Nursing Homes: Visit a local nursing home and offer to read with residents, play board games, or host a BINGO game. Encourage your child to donate their paintings to brighten the residents’ day, or if your child is comfortable and has a steady hand, spend the afternoon giving manicures.

Help Animals: Start a fundraiser to gather food, toys, blankets, and towels to donate to your local animal shelter. Or suggest that your child saves their allowance or birthday money in order to go on a shopping spree and buy the items themselves!

Take Care of the Homeless: Put together backpacks for homeless men and women in your community. Talk to your parish about getting involved with this! Spend a few weeks gathering supplies as a church, and then host a “packing party” on a Sunday afternoon after Mass. Everyone can take a few backpacks and keep them in the trunk of the car.

Thank Servicemen: Put together care packages for your local firemen and policemen. Include a thank you card from your child, as well as cookies or brownies that they’ve decorated.

Pick Up Trash: Take a family trip to the beach or park and spend the first part of your day walking around to pick up any trash. Walk in pairs to make sure your child doesn’t pick up anything they shouldn’t and wear gardening gloves to ensure safety.

Help Your Neighbor: Whether your neighbor is elderly, a widow, or just a busy mom, everyone can benefit from a little extra care. Offer to pull weeds for them, take care of the kids for the morning, and deliver a home-cooked meal (and you can always offer to stay and join a lonely neighbor).
