Teaching Your Child About Finding the Joy in Each Day

You may not be able to teach your child happiness, but you can help them live a happier life. People of all ages can benefit from a little more joy in their lives. Finding the joy in each day doesn’t mean ignoring the bad or not feeling negative emotions. It means making the most of life with the tools you’re given. Here are a few ways you can help your child find more joy in everyday life:

Learn to Be More Joyful

Modeling happy behavior will give your child a great reference point. Where you lead, your child is likely to follow. Spend more time with close friends and supportive family members. Find more reasons to smile and laugh. Show your child what a joyful life can look like, and you’ll bring them one step closer to living one themselves.

Emphasize Gratitude

Gratitude can be a source of happiness. Teaching your child to be grateful for what they have — and what they don’t have — can go a long way toward creating a joyful mindset. Lead by example. Tell your child what you’re grateful for, and ask them to give you examples of things they’re grateful for, as well. Say “thank you” to others for small good deeds to help your child see how gratitude can spread joy and bring it back around.

Encourage Kindness

Help your child learn how to be kinder to others. Small acts of kindness can go a long way, especially when they’re unexpected. When they criticize their classmates or relatives, encourage them to reframe their thinking. Teach them that everyone deserves kindness, even if they don’t meet your expectations. If your child treats others with kindness as a default, they’re likely to see others in a more positive light.

Teach Optimism

When you’re caught up in emotions, it can be difficult to look on the bright side. However, a little bit of optimism can go a long way. When a situation comes up that makes your child feel defeated, help them see the light at the end of the tunnel. Even when conditions are less than ideal, your child will be able to think more positively and have more hope for the future.

Find Joy in Faith

Help your child find joy in knowing that no matter what happens in life, God will always be there. One of the greatest joys of Christian faith is being able to spend eternity with God, who created everything and has a plan in mind for every person. Encourage your child to pray as a way to release their negative thoughts and find hope for the future.
