5 Ways to Get More Active as a Family
Family time is often spent sitting together, whether it’s at the dinner table or in front of the TV. The more technology we have at our fingertips, the less active we tend to be. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. You and your family can get up and move together, and it can be a great way to bond and have fun! Here are a few ways you can get more active with your family:
Set Screen Time Limits
The first question to ask when it comes to getting more active is “what’s stopping us from being active now”? While technology helps us in many ways, it can also be a distraction that encourages sedentary behavior. Figure out how many hours each family member spends with screens, and see where everyone can cut back. Set healthy limits for internet use, TV watching and gaming for everyone in the house.
Model Healthy Habits
When you’re around your child, be mindful that they can see everything you do. More often than not, they’ll follow your example without being told. So if your child sees you spending most of your time on the couch, they’ll think that’s the place to be. Get up, walk around, and show your child what an active lifestyle can look like. With any luck, they’ll follow suit.
Plan Walks Together
You can tell your child to do something until you’re blue in the face, but that won’t make them do it. One way you can motivate your child and monitor their habits is by being active together. Invite your child along on walks through the neighborhood, at the park or even in the mall. Whatever gets your family excited about moving around will encourage them to continue the positive behavior.
Go On Active Vacations
Relaxation is an essential part of vacations, but you don’t have to spend the whole time sitting poolside. Choose destinations that have nature hikes, monuments or big museums to explore. Show your family what the world has to offer while getting them up and moving around. Just make sure you don’t overdo it. Active adventures are great, but rest is just as important. Make sure to plan meals and breaks between activities.
Involve Friends and Other Family
When possible, turn active time into an opportunity to connect with friends and other family members. If you’re planning a trip to the park, see if your child wants to invite some friends from school. Ask other family members if they want to join your traveling party. The more, the merrier, especially when it comes to forming healthy habits!
