Why Water?
Did you know that more than 70 percent of the human body is made up of water, and our brains alone are 80% water? No wonder our brain works better when we’re hydrated! When children drink enough water, they’re better prepared for academic success.
How Much Water?
Although we often hear that we should drink eight cups a day, it’s actually different for different ages! If your child is 5-8 years old, they should drink five glasses a day. For 9-12 year olds, seven glasses are recommended, and for children over 13, 8-10 glasses are recommended. On days full of exercise or hot weather, it’s best to drink more than the suggested amount — especially in Florida.
Water and the Brain
When we don’t drink enough water, our brain is the first to show it; we can suffer from concentration and memory problems, fatigue, and headaches. These side effects will negatively affect your child’s ability to focus during their days at school. However, a well-hydrated brain delivers amazing benefits!
- Improved concentration and cognition: When our brains are hydrated, we can stay alert and keep focused on important tasks, such as studying, group projects, or lectures.
- Balanced mood and emotions: At school, younger students learn how to manage and display their emotions, but without water, they struggle. Studies have shown that hydration helps us regulate our mood.
- Test scores: Hydrated students are proven to have higher test scores than those who are dehydrated.
- Less stress: Water keeps brain cells active! It also balances chemical processes in the brain, helping your child to feel less stressed and anxious.
- Better sleep: Does your student lie awake for hours after bedtime? If so, try giving them more water throughout the day. Water increases blood flow to the brain, increasing oxygenation and making it easier to sleep well. A good night’s rest is crucial to a successful day at school!
- Better memory: Studies have shown that dehydration and poor memory are linked. It only causes mild dehydration for this to take effect! By drinking enough water, your child is better able to recall and utilize the concepts they work so hard to memorize.
How to Add More Water
It’s easy to add more water into your child’s daily life! Whenever you go out, always pack a few extra water bottles. Minimize the amount of sugary beverages your child drinks — whether it’s soda or fruit juice — and get them used to drinking water instead. When it’s a special occasion and they’re able to have their favorite sugary drink, make sure it’s a small amount in a smaller cup.
