Teach Your Child to Write Haiku Poetry

Haikus are a form of poetry that first began in Japan. Comprised of three lines, the poem includes 17 syllables that are broken up into a five-seven-five rule: five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, five in the third. Teach your child how to write a haiku for a fun activity and bonding experience!

Syllables
Start by teaching your child what a syllable actually is. A syllable is a part of a word that is a whole unit. It typically includes a vowel by itself or a vowel with up to two consonants. Give your child a piece of writing to have her identify how many syllables each word has. While she reads aloud, have her clap the syllables in the words!

Subjects
The thought of writing a poem might stress your child out. But because haikus are short, they are typically written about simple things that are recognizable for readers — making them perfect for young children! Animals and nature, for example, are common subject matters found in these types of poems. Share examples of haikus and have her guess what they are all about. Then, she will feel inspired to write her own!

Practice
Once she has created a list of potential subjects, have her write down the characteristics of each of them. Having a good list of descriptive words will help her use her imagination while writing, so her first draft will be easier to do. Remind her to be vivid with descriptions. If she wrote about scenic places like the beach, take her there for inspiration! If you don’t want to go too far, there is plenty of inspiration right in your own yard! From seasons to nature, themes are all around us in the world.

Encouragement
Haikus are all about beauty and appreciation. Because this is a new and challenging process for your child, be sure to give her words of encouragement and rewards. Provide suggestions for subject matters and word usage, and clap syllables along with her. Being by her side will make her feel supported and boost her confidence. When she completes a haiku, display it on the refrigerator, and give her a treat for a job well done!
